So, I relented and upgraded today from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the iPhone 14 Pro, electing to go with a smaller phone both because it was available and because I felt I could cope with the smaller form factor.
What a frustrating upgrade! When I last upgraded it went particularly smoothly, only delayed as all apps downloaded and data was synced, however, today a bug the Apple failed to check before sending out its new phones prevented my activating the phone; honestly, how stupid can you get!
To get going I was forced to shut down, turn in again and plug into my MacBook Pro upon which it was then able to proceed. Though my frustrations didn’t end here, oh no. Signed into iCloud, finally, data and app downloads commenced and seemingly paused. Apps just seemed to stop download and your left wondering where things are. After a time I went into settings and deleted the VPN upon where things improved, it seems iOS was trying to route through a VPN that was not yet logged into, ugh.
This highlights the poor user experience of the new iPhone setup, the constant spin of a spinner animation tells the user absolutely nothing. This needs to be replaced with information updating the user with:
- X of Y GB downloaded (n%)
- A of B applications installed (m%)
After all was downloaded the usual logging into various applications was required, though I’m not having iMessage not syncing as it keeps saying I’m not connected to wifi despite being. I’ve tried a variety of fixes but these have not worked so far, just trying charging to see how that goes.
Despite iPhone 14 Pro touting dynamic island I’m yet to see it shows up as a feature. I’ve only had it feature for Face ID with icons at either end, but nothing where it grows any – disappointing much!
