Nordic Noir

With the break between courses I have binge watched shows on various services like never before, including more recently our SBS On Demand, a free service here in Australia featuring many foreign language offerings.

A friend at work told me if several Nordic noir programs she and her husband had enjoyed, including Beforeigners and The Bridge.

Sadly, I’ve only learned a few months of Norwegian, so it’s looking very much at the subtitles and recognising words here and there common between the languages.

Beforeigners was great, focusing on time travels and people from several past periods, including the Viking age, emerging in the water in modern times. How to handle their arrival given you can’t treat them as an illegal arrival. Hoping they’ll make a third season, though nothing yet announced.

I’m now watching The Bridge, a Swedish/Danish series revolving around the bridge connecting Copenhagen and Malmö and murders involving their nationals. The episodes are particularly long at almost an hour, yet easily suck you in. I’ve just started season three where the Danish leads changes from Martin to Henrik, a pity as I really enjoyed Martin and Sara together.

I have to say I’m quite enjoying my dive into Nordic Noir, will have to get further recommendations I think.
