In late March 1996, Martin Bryant forever changed the Australian landscape when he went to the historic Port Arthur site in Tasmania and with his automatic rifle killed 35 people. No matter where you were in Australia you felt the horror of their loss. Ultimately this horrific event led to change in gun ownership laws in Australia and the government began a gun buyback and destruction scheme.
Today, in Texas, there was another mass shooting taking place in a school killing 19 children, 2 brave teachers, and beforehand the killer’s grandmother. An 18 year old was able to purchase assault rifles for use in today’s murderous spree, how and why do you allow this America?
I just don’t get why anyone outside the military ever should have these weapons. I don’t know why households need guns period, the figures show around 50,000 gun-related killings last year – so scary.
I hope events today in Texas do bring about change, though I don’t hold hope as we’ve seen over and over no one in power seems up for the hard graft. So sad as it’s people and the children dying for their inaction.
