After purchasing my iPhone 12 Pro Max last month I went on the hunt for a MagSafe compatible car mount.
My search started on the Apple store where only one product was listed, a Belkin mount that didn’t power the phone, only mounted it. It did have means for keeping the USB cable in-check, however you’d need to plug this in each time you snapped the iPhone in, hardly desirable.
I continued my search on popular Mac review websites to see if they’d reviewed anything, unfortunately as the iPhone 12 range was so new at this stage there wasn’t anything showing up at this point. Ironically, it was when I headed to Whirlpool, an Australian tech form website, that another user shared their having pre-ordered from ESR the HaloLock Magnetic Wireless Car Charger. Like the Belkin, this HaloLock used MagSafe to allow iPhone 12 phones to snap on/off without need for any additional support, however this device connected USB power to also charge the phone.
I pre-ordered the ESR HaloLock back on November 23 and it finally arrived in Perth, Australia on December 22. After quickly assembling the MagSafe ‘Dock’ to the aircon connector and plugging in the USB to my existing cigarette lighter USB charger I was ready to go. I ‘snapped’ the iPhone 12 Pro Max on to the HaloLock somewhat nervously, it held and began charging. Driving away, and over speed humps too, the phone continued to hold.
