Study Smart

Do I buy a new MacBook Pro with M1? Or do I wait and see where Apple takes future releases of their Apple Silicon chips? My current MacBook Pro (late-2016) is still rather zippy, however its storage capacity is somewhat lacking as I only bought the 512GB version. It is tempting to upgrade as the new M1 machines are speedy machines, however I do wonder what lay beyond their baseline machines.

Beyond just purely wanting to upgrade, I am also concerned as the MacBook Pro looks like it may need to have a battery replacement in the coming year, since upgrading to Big Sur its battery just seems to evaporate. This is of concern for me as I have applied to study a Master of Cyber Security from March 2021, so a computer that has poor battery life when you’re away from home means you’re needing to carry a heavy and bulky battery pack.

Solution, my iPad Pro. The iPad Pro has great battery life and has Office applications too, and also connects to my iCloud storage where I’d be saving my documents. By going this route I only needed to change my iPad’s case to a keyboard case, in particular Apple’s Smart Keyboard Folio case. Though it’s not entirely cheap at AUD$269, it is considerably cheaper than the cost of a MacBook Pro M1 16/1TB that I was looking at.

So, I took the plunge today and bought the case, and am using the keyboard case to type this post. Pros for the case are it is super easy to connect to and use, offering two positions and the keyboard is really comfortable to type on. Cons, the case doesn’t secure the iPad Pro in any way and the Apple Pencil isn’t catered for, it must connect to the iPad Pro magnetically. This last point really concerns me as the Pencil could dislodge were you walking around and a rather expensive accessory might be lost. I would have preferred some means of securing the pencil to the case so it cannot easily be lost.

Given this, I have actually purchased from Waterfield a sleeve for the iPad Pro that accommodates the case and includes somewhere to stow the pencil. Beauty is that the sleeve will match the messenger bag I bought from them several years ago. Hopefully they ship soon, will look amazing.
