After around two months feeling unwell following the consumption of any form of cows milk, including lactose free varieties, I finally bit the bullet over the weekend and decided I’d try almond milk. I had tried this briefly years ago, however the taste really turned me off, I assure you nothing has changed in the years since.
What was different for me was that I didn’t experience the sickly feeling I had been experiencing with cows milk, it was nice. Then, Saturday evening I started to experience an itchiness on my hands and face. I dismissed this as I do sometimes get an itchiness from oily skin on my face. The sensation continued the following Day and into today, and after ordering by an almond latte on campus my tongue also started to feel slightly tingly.
With all these sensations I decided to Google doctor (this once!) and investigate whether this was common or possible, and indeed it was something not uncommon for tree nuts. Wonderful! What was I to look to now? My wonderful colleague Sharon to the rescue, she suggested oat milk should be investigated, it was nice and creamy, she even bought me an oat milk latte to try, it was lovely.
So, my supply of almond milk now down to sink and my housemate has been gifted my lactose free milk. I’ve bought oat milk to now try and hope that’s my way forward. Aren’t our bodies strange things in the way they change.
