Bushfires and summer go hand-in-hand, it’s a sad fact of life. Unfortunately there are also those who seek to create these fires, enjoying watching that which they set alight, often volunteering with the very services that seek to extinguish the flames. Sadly, here in Australia bushfires have been ravaging the country since September, the staggering size of areas burnt or currently burning is just amazing, see this 9News article with maps highlight comparisons to international locations.
There is the suggestion that at least 480 million animals have been lost to-date in these fires, it is difficult to comprehend how so many might have been lost; there is even the suggestion some species may have been lost as result of the fires. The human losses continue to increase, fires in Victoria appear to have claimed 28 lives, and just recently on the New South Wales south-coast 8 lives were lost, including two volunteer fire fighters.
My eldest sister’s in-laws who live in the Shoalhaven region south of Sydney are now in an affected area, with their state having declared their area an evacuation zone today. Some luck tonight, winds shifting giving some reprieve though not cancelling the evacuation order.
I cannot fathom how the brave men and women of the fire brigade services are coping after all this time, their exhaustion must be epic.
